Note to self…….

war-peace…don’t earwig other people’s conversations if you can’t listen to them and keep a straight face at the same time.

Overheard this morning in a local tearoom.  Proud grandfather:

“Of course, Lily-May is doing really well and Tolstoy is coming along nicely at school now.  He can almost write in full sentences.”

That’ll be War and Peace by the end of the week, then?

  1. 🙂 I’ve heard some daft names in my time (I work in a school….) but *Tolstoy*? However much you might love an author, to saddle a child with that is just cruel!!

    1. You have to wonder sometimes just what the parents are thinking about, don’t you? Now a dog called Tolstoy I could just about handle; but a child……

  2. Haven’t read anything by Lily May yet – but as she is coming along well and seems to be in advance of Tolstoy, I’ll look out for her work!

  3. Hahahaha, oh heavens. I never heard the word “earwig” in this context before but I love it. I badly need a word for this because I do it alllll the time. Over the years I have become better (not perfect) at keeping from giggling.

  4. I did once sit on a train to Edinburgh opposite a young man named Lysander telling me his brothers and sisters were begging their parents not to name the new baby Apollo. Why couldn’t they call him Tom? I wish I’d known Tolstoy was a possibility – he might have been comforted to think it could be worse! 🙂

    1. I once taught with a Cosmo, so perhaps Apollo wouldn’t have been that far out afar all. However, I’m definitely with the lad who wanted Tom.
